Physics Escape Academy Part 2

A new set of missions awaits inside the Edison Research Facility! In this 14-week, hands-on STEM class, students ages 8–14 investigate forces and motion, learn to design experiments and interpret data, and build and test engineering solutions. The evidence they collect becomes the clues they need to solve escape-room challenges.

New and returning agents are welcome. Part 1 is optional.

New missions. New clues. One final escape.

The Edison Research Facility is opening a new set of case files this spring. Inside are incomplete records, puzzling results, and engineering problems that need a team of young investigators. Over 14 weeks, students will run experiments, build and test solutions, and use their results to solve escape-room challenges.

What will students learn?

  • Experimental design. Turn a question into a test, predict what might happen, and change one variable at a time so they can tell what made a difference.
  • Measurement and data analysis. Measure distance and time, organize results in tables and graphs, and use patterns in the data to draw conclusions.
  • Forces and motion. Investigate how pushes, pulls, gravity, and friction affect an object’s speed and direction. Use evidence from a test to explain why an object moved the way it did.
  • Engineering design. Build a prototype, test it against a goal, and revise it based on what happened. Compare two designs and explain which one worked better under the same conditions.
  • Evidence-based problem-solving. Work with incomplete information, decide what can be inferred from the clues, and identify what needs another measurement or test.
  • Scientific communication and teamwork. Share observations, compare explanations, and make a case for a solution using evidence the team collected.

Imagine finding a movement log with entries missing. Students have to figure out which details they can reconstruct, what they still need to measure, and whether their explanation fits all the clues. That’s the kind of work they’ll do inside the facility.

What happens in a mission?

Physics investigation. Students start with a question or a piece of evidence. They make a prediction, run a hands-on experiment, and record what they observe.

Engineering build. They use what they discovered to build or improve a solution. If the first design fails, they decide what to change and test it again.

Escape challenge. Measurements, observations, and results become clues. Students put the evidence together to unlock the next step.

The Black File. Students ready for an extra challenge can take on a case with fewer clues, tighter design constraints, or more than one possible solution.

The semester ends with a team escape challenge that brings together the investigation, design, and problem-solving skills students have practiced throughout the spring.

Can my child join if they missed Part 1?

Yes! New agents learn how to read a mission brief, record evidence, and work through a challenge from the first session. Returning agents get a fresh set of cases and opportunities to take their investigations further. Part 1 is optional.
