Can you build a robot that can deliver a package, stop at the right spot, or navigate around an obstacle?
In this 14-week LEGO Robotics class, students work with Coach Lesley to design, build, and program robots using LEGO® Education SPIKE™ kits. Each challenge gives the robot a job to do and gives students a reason to think carefully about how they build it and what instructions they give it.
What will students learn?
- Mechanical design. Build sturdy models and explore how wheels, axles, and attachments affect the way a robot moves or performs a task.
- Block-based programming. Put instructions in order, use loops to repeat actions, and experiment with settings for speed, direction, and timing.
- Motors and sensors. Program motors to move a robot or attachment, and explore how sensor input can tell a robot when to stop or change what it’s doing.
- Measurement and testing. Compare how far a robot travels, check how accurately it turns, and adjust the build or code to make its movements more reliable.
- Debugging. Figure out whether a problem comes from the build, the code, or the setup. Change one thing at a time and test again to see what helped.
- Engineering communication. Explain how a robot works, describe what changed during testing, and share ideas with other builders.
What does a class look like?
Students start with a short build or coding lesson, then apply it to a challenge. For example, a robot might need to carry a small load across a course and stop inside a delivery zone. Students decide how to hold the load, write the instructions, and run a test. If the robot overshoots the target or drops the cargo, they use what they observed to improve their design.
The class builds from guided activities toward challenges where students make more of their own design and programming decisions. Beginners are welcome.
