SUMMARY:Beginner Maker Lab: Tools
DESCRIPTION:Beginner Maker Lab: Tools\nBuild. Measure. Fasten. Create. \nKickstart Your Student’s Hands-On Confidence!\nJoin us for a focused 6-week hands-on workshop where students learn to use real tools with skill\, precision\, and confidence. Beginning April 9th at 1:00 pm\, students will step into the workshop and begin building foundational mechanical skills that prepare them for robotics\, engineering\, and real-world problem solving. \nIn Beginner Maker Lab: Tools\, students won’t just “make projects” — they’ll develop essential tool skills through structured mini-builds that intentionally progress toward a final functional tool caddy they’ll assemble and take home. \nThroughout the 6 weeks\, students will learn how to: \n\n\nMeasure accurately and mark with precision \n\n\nSand for smooth\, professional finishes \n\n\nDrive screws correctly using pilot holes \n\n\nHammer with control and alignment \n\n\nDrill straight and understand proper fit \n\n\nThis workshop is designed for students who are ready to build real-world capability from the ground up. Whether they plan to move into robotics\, combat robotics\, or advanced engineering builds — or simply want greater confidence working with their hands — this lab provides the physical foundation every maker needs. \nLed by experienced mentors\, students will work in a structured\, skill-focused environment where safety\, precision\, and craftsmanship come first. Each session builds intentionally toward mastery. \nEvery class follows the Edison Engineering Design Process (E²DP):Explore. Envision. Engineer. Execute. Evaluate. Explain. \nStudents won’t just use tools — they’ll learn how to think before building\, measure before drilling\, and assemble with purpose and accuracy. \nThis is more than a woodworking class. It’s a confidence-building experience that helps students realize they are capable of building real\, functional projects with professional standards. \n\nWhat’s Included?\nMeasuring & Layout Skills – Read a tape measure\, mark accurately\, find center\, and plan builds with precision. \nSurface Prep & Finish – Learn sanding techniques\, grit progression\, and the importance of clean finishing. \nScrewing & Structural Assembly – Drill pilot holes\, drive screws properly\, and build square\, stable joints. \nNailing & Alignment – Develop hammer control and spacing precision through structured pattern builds. \nDrilling & Tolerance – Practice perpendicular drilling and proper fit through a tic-tac-toe peg board project. \nFinal Build: Personal Tool Caddy – Combine all learned skills to assemble a functional wooden tool caddy. \nTake-Home Tool Kit – Each student receives a starter tool set to place inside their completed caddy. \nSmall Group Instruction – Hands-on coaching in a focused environment designed to build real skill\, not just complete projects. \nAll materials and tools provided. \n\nWorkshop Details\nStart Date: April 9thTime: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pmLength: 6 WeeksLocation: Edison Kids Innovation Center9300 Normandy Blvd\, Suite 508Jacksonville\, FL 32221 \nCost: $500 per student \nEdison Kids is a Step Up For Students direct provider. \nIdeal for ages 9–16 (mature 8-year-olds welcome). No prior experience required. \nSpaces are limited — register today and give your student the skills to build with confidence. \nMeasure with precision.Build with purpose.Think like a maker.

SUMMARY:Combat Robotics II: Fridays PM
DESCRIPTION:Combat Robotics II: Design\, Upgrade & Compete\n  \nTake Your Robot to the Next Level!\nReady to move beyond the basic build and start thinking like a real engineer? In Combat Robotics II\, students continue their combat robotics journey by redesigning\, upgrading\, and refining their existing 1 lb plastic ant-weight robot for improved performance and competition. \nThis 6-week workshop focuses on intentional design\, problem-solving\, and iteration. Students analyze how their robot performs\, identify weaknesses\, and make strategic upgrades while working within real-world engineering constraints\, including a 1 lb weight limit and a built-in parts budget. Rather than starting from scratch\, students learn how engineers improve designs over time—making smart tradeoffs and decisions along the way. \nDesigned for students who have completed the beginner combat robotics workshop\, this program strengthens students’ engineering skills and competitive experience in the Edison Robotics League (ERL). \n\nWhat Students Will Learn\n\n\nHow to evaluate robot performance and identify design weaknesses \n\n\nHow to redesign and upgrade specific systems (armor\, wheels\, motors\, structure) \n\n\nHow to manage a budget and weight limit like real engineers \n\n\nHow to test\, iterate\, and improve designs intentionally \n\n\nHow to document decisions as part of an engineering design portfolio \n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\n\n\nParts Budget Included – Students receive a built-in budget to purchase approved upgrade parts for their robot \n\n\nHands-On Engineering Instruction – Guided by experienced robotics mentors \n\n\nDesign & Testing Time – Structured redesign\, build\, and test sessions \n\n\nCompetition Prep – Skills that directly prepare students for league-level battles \n\n\nPortfolio Foundations – Students begin documenting their engineering decisions and growth \n\n\n\nProgram Details\n📅 Workshop Dates: 4/17\, 4/24\, 5/8\, 5/15\, 5/29⏰ Time: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm📍 Location: Edison Kids Innovation Center9300 Normandy Blvd\, Suite 508Jacksonville\, FL 32221 \nCost: $400 (Step Up For Students Direct Provider)Pre-requisite:Must have completed the Combat Beginners Workshop \n\nWhat Makes This Workshop Different\n\n\nStudents do not build a new robot—they learn how to improve an existing one \n\n\nEvery upgrade must fit within budget and weight constraints \n\n\nEmphasis is placed on engineering thinking\, not just winning battles \n\n\nPerfect for students interested in robotics\, engineering\, or problem-solving \n\n\n\nThis Is Just the Beginning\nDesigned for students continuing their combat robotics journey\, Combat Robotics II enhances both engineering skills and competitive experience for those participating in the Edison Robotics League. \nSpaces are limited.Upgrade your robot. Sharpen your skills. Think like an engineer. \nLearn. Design. Compete. Improve.
